Seems like they were banned because their kit ['uniform' in the US] was deemed to constitute a religious symbol, which is banned from football kits by FIFA rules. Completely unike, um, this England shirt here [2005-2007], which included the CROSS of ST GEORGE....
Not to mention the mind-boggling corruption that is the sine qua non of both the IOC and FIFA.
