Memorial Day. Semper Fi.

Great story on NPR's Morning Edition yesterday by Daniel Robison of WFIU Bloomington about WW2 vets being flown to DC to see the WW2 Memorial there.

Our Medicated Military; what keeps the Wounded Platoon fighting

Response to various things I read and saw, but mostly the incredibly moving and enraging "The Wounded Platoon" on PBS Frontline. What a great system - we exploit vulnerable young men, drive them crazy, kick them out with dishonorable discharges for being crazy, and then say that they are not eligible for VA care since they were dishonorably discharged. Fucking magnificent.

English Defence League; Fascism Lives!

Fantastic Guardian video report on the so-called English Defence League, Britain's latest manifestation of violent, exploitative fascist bullshit. It seems like every decade along comes another acronym that captures the poor ill-educated British working class male and gives him something to do on the Saturday afternoons that he's not being a football hooligan.

Though the latest news is that it looks like the Sheriff might have won. Never bet against a Sheriff in a brawl.

Venter 'Creates' Self-Replicating Life

Here we go! Fantastic response from my brother Ken. Update 29 May - this was in today's Courier; I was amazed.

Rand Paul Wins KY GOP Primary

I drew this cartoon like five minutes after he won. I thought I better post it before he said so many more crazy things that it was rendered redundant or meaningless or something. Wow he is a piece of work. In fact this cartoon is already kinda dated as you could argue that all of his lunacy over the past few days has meant that the Dems are much more delighted than they are terrified of the power of the Tea Party; Rand Paul might well make this a much more competitive race than it otherwise would have been.

Rep. Mark Souder's Resignation

An absolute classic republican scandal. Congressman resigns over an affair with a staffer with whom he had made a video touting abstinence-only sex education. You can't make this sh*t up.

Evansville Smoking Ban

Lots of letters in the Courier arguing that the smoking ban is a fundamental attack on rights and liberty. What a crock. I was somewhat surprised that the paper published this cartoon today. I think they just wanted to reassure people that I could still draw a cartoon that didn't have an elephant in it...

British Election looks like Ours

Update - Gordon Brown resigns as British PM; looks like Cameron will be PM with a Lib-Dem coalition. Absolutely fascinating piece in the Guardian about Nick Clegg's negotiating position, deciphered from his scribbled notes on a piece of paper.
Remains to be seen if Buschon and Coats can talk their way to power too....

Coats Wins GOP Senate Primary in Indiana

Of course, with more Republicans voting against him than for him, as well as all his other baggage, he doesn't have as much momentum as he thinks he has. [As you can see the New! Improved! Ellsworth donkey now has more hair and bigger eyebrows - and a more accurate 5-pointed Vanderburgh county Sheriff's badge.Hey we're nothing if not flexible here at MacleodCartoons.] Pretty funny too that Larry Bucshon only squeaked past Risk in the GOP primary for the Indiana 8th District - despite being 'anointed' by the national party and having oodles of money. He'll hobble into November's election with the overwhelming support of 33% of his own party. It's gonna be interesting.
